Become a Farmer in Residence

Folks love school gardens and greenhouses! Raising the funds to build a school/church garden is often a relatively easy ask. However, most school gardens run into problems both maintaining and using the space effectively once the initial build is completed. Beautiful greenhouses become storage areas for broken desks and chairs once that passionate parent volunteer moves on. Teachers are often asked to give of their own time outside of their classroom duties. Neither approach is sustainable.

We believe that our Farmer in Residence program offers a unique solution to the twin problems of maintenance and use of these garden spaces!

Our unique Farmer in Residence program is designed to help our young farmers put their skills to use in the community. Under the leadership of our Executive Director, Dr Julie Gullett, the Farmers in Residence (FIR) assist service agencies to design, build, maintain and use their gardens. We believe that smart design can literally build community. But- we offer far more than help with the initial stages of the project----we aim to build community over time.

The Farmer in Residence (FIR) connects with their assigned service agency each week to assist in maintaining the space, and together with Dr Julie Gullett, provides innovative programming that focuses on food skills, belonging, and community building.

The maintenance and programming needs of each service agency are unique. With nearly 30 years of experience as an educator, social worker and farmer, Dr Gullett works with each agency to craft an approach that will meet their individual needs. Throughout the season, Dr Gullett and the FIR work with the agency to offer innovative programming that incorporates food skills, belonging and service opportunities for the broader community. This mentorship model allows the FIR to develop their skills as a farmer and community member and it ensures that service agencies are supported in utilizing their built environment to maximize community building.
